Understanding Your Results -Active Infection Test
If your results are positive, it is important to contact your healthcare provider immediately, self-isolate, and monitor your symptoms. If your results are negative, you were most likely not infected with COVID-19 at the time of sample collection. However, it is important to note that in some cases there is not enough SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the sample to detect the virus. This can happen in a certain percentage of cases during the stages of infection. If you are experiencing symptoms, it is important to follow up with a healthcare provider for further evaluation, and to take protective measures to avoid infecting others.
Understanding Your Results -Prior Infection Test
If you have a positive test result, it is possible that you have or previously had COVID-19 and that you have developed an antibody response to the virus. A negative test result means that the antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19 were not found in our sample. However, it is possible for a negative result to occur if you are tested early in your illness and your body hasn’t had time to produce antibodies to infection. This means that you could possibly still have COVID-19 even though the test is negative. Follow-up testing with a molecular diagnostic should be considered to rule out infection in these individuals. Results from antibody testing should not be used as the sole basis to diagnose or exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection or to inform infection status. More information can be found on CDC’s webpage on COVID-19 Testing.
